The Team – Sports Photography and Journalism

As a society we celebrate winners, the people who achieve the highest ranking and/or score. We tend to overlook those who played a role as enablers. We don’t see them in the forefront or even as part of the success. But they are! They play a role. However small or big a role they play, without them many successes and wins could and would not be achieved. It occurred to me, while I was doing a recent shoot, how I concentrated on the competitors, performers and winners and automatically bypassed the people behind the scene. They ranged from the trainers, organisers to the cleaners and hospitality staff. Yet when I stopped for a minute or two and turned the ‘spotlight’ onto them – aka my camera, their images tell a compelling story that we shouldn’t forget.

So, yes let’s celebrate and continue to celebrate the achievers, but if you don’t normally do this – spare a thought for the people behind the scene that help to make the ‘end product’ or an event great.

This quote sum up my thoughts well. It was made in 1969 by a Janitor at NASA who was asked, “What do you do here at Cape Canaveral?” His reply was on point:- “I am part of the team that put a man on the moon.”
